Nope, it is not just you or your eyes playing tricks on you. XAUUSD is indeed moving very quickly and is very volatile right now. A 10 pips feel like 100 pips, a 100 pips feel like 1000 pips. It is what it is.
It is probably easier to trade manual or use a clean single entry break out entry EAs now. Martingale users, be very careful. ATP EA 1 was unfazed despite the heavier movements. If anything, it just means that it has more pips to collect and profit. DD has increased slightly to 14.40%. Am I worried? Nah, I'd win.
